Reader’s Question:

My 15-year old daughter has just gotten her driving permit and I don’t know if I have to add her right now to my car insurance policy here Evansville, Indiana. If I have to do that now, how much increase will I see on my insurance rates?

The driving permit would let your teen daughter to drive but with some restrictions such as having a licensed driver in the car and in some states, they can only drive during the daytime. Moreover, the driver’s permit usually expires after 60, 90 or 180 days. The state of Indiana would require you to list your teen daughter with a driver’s permit on your car insurance policy in Evansville, Indiana. A lot of car insurance providers usually don’t have additional charge on insurance rates for teens with driving permit and have them wait until they already have driver’s license, but still have them listed on your car insurance policy.

Car insurance providers would look at a certain date, either your teen daughter’s 16th birthday or the date of the expiration of her driver’s permit, before they start charging for an additional driver. Should your teen daughter does not get her driver’s license, you must advise your car insurance company so that you would not see additional charge on your premiums for your teen.
