Reader’s Question:

I filed a claim with my auto insurance company here in Indiana after being involved in an accident. My car was declared totaled and I didn’t agree with the company’s calculation of my car’s value, what can I do about that?

If you do not agree with the settlements on your totaled car, I assume that you do not want to have your old, damaged vehicle back. People like you often object that the auto insurance company will not give you sufficient money for you to purchase a similar vehicle. But your auto insurance provider’s approximation of what a similar vehicle costs could vary from the actualities of the marketplace. There are a lot of factors that influence the value of your vehicle, such as miles driven and condition of the vehicle before the collision to name a few.

Since you dispute the auto insurance provider’s evaluation of your car, you may opt to take into service an independent evaluator in Indiana at your own cost to make an examination on your car. You may get in touch with a local repair shop or garage to be able to look for one. Make certain to get thorough examination put in writing then hand over those details to your insurer. In case your insurer turns you down and disagree to give you more money, you still have two choices left — arbitration and litigation. In arbitration, both you and your insurer would show your evidence to a third party arbitrator. The decision could be non-binding which means that if you are still unconvinced with the decision, you can still take the matter to court.
